  3. I came across your blog from a post in the Deals & Steals group on Cafe Mom.
Hmm, I remember my Smurfs lunch box that I got in 1st grade. Another girl in my class had the same one and she was always taking mine so I “wrote” my name across the picture on the front. Boy, was my mom NOT happy!

  5. I always had to use brown paper lunch bags when I went to school. My parents could never afford the cool lunch boxes like the other kids had. I always wanted to have a Strawberry Shortcake or the Garbage Pail lunc box. I always get my daughter what ever lunch box she wants now that I am the parent!

  6. Growing up I had two lunchboxes that were my pride and joy. One was a tin pink gingham lunch box that featured Holly Hobby on the front. The thermos, the most awesome thermos ever, was pink and I just know that everyone was jealous! My other lunch box looked just like my grandpa’s. It was tin, and was shaped like a loaf of bread, complete with slices! I love this lunch box, and was totally devasted when my little brother lost it.

  7. What great lunch box memories! I had a Holly Hobbie lunch box too in elementary school. However, I think my favorite one had a cute Haunted House picture and on the back there was spinner so you could play games with pennies. Keep the stories coming!

  10. When I was in school, I rarely got to take a lunch from home, but when I did, it was in a brown bag. My favorite school memory is my 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Studley. She was amazing. She took me under her wing, and showed me that I could forget all about the crap in my real world, by escaping into books. She never forgot me, and kept up with me until shortly before she died. She was an amazing woman. I’ll miss her forever.

  12. I’m really excited and nervous this year, my twin girls are starting Pre-K and I’m starting on yet another chapter in their life. I can’t wait to see what the coming years bring for them and as with all the other parts of their life so far, I intend to enjoy every minute of it. They will be bringing lunch to school and it will be fun to finally be able to try out some of the fun tips I’ve seen to make sure that they eat their lunch and try to make it fun for them! I vaguely remember the lunches I brought in elementary school with PB & J, and a thermos with Kool-Aid!

  13. I remember having the coolest lunch box ever a hard lunch box with a thermas and it was woody woodpecker and popeye and wiley coyote and all the characters that we watched on tv back then. I used the lunch box until I got my second job and then my mom made me give it to my little sister. Now my sister uses it as decoration in her kitchen. Wow this is great I heard about this and then told my daughter about the lunch box now she wants one.

  15. I’m pretty sure I was the only girl with a Batman lunchbox, and sheesh, did I love that lunchbox! I used to keep a small Batman figure in there–you know, to protect my lunch! When I was little, I used to swear to anyone who would listen that little plastic hero was talking to me from in there! I used to say, “Mommy, Batman is alive!” Wow, I haven’t thought about that in years. It was nice thinking back to those times! thanks!

  16. It was a long time ago, but it seems I had a Rainbow Brite tin lunch box….ahh those were the days….my mom always packed chocolate pudding and my friends would fight over who got to lick the lid of my puddin pack…haha!

  17. When I was a kid (and this will really date my age) I loved the Bay City Rollers. I started wearing and decorating with plaid. While shopping with Mom, I found a plaid lunchbox and thermos ( of course I had to have it). I took pictures of the group and put them on box, and that was the only lunchbox I would use for 3 years.

  21. My favorite lunch box was a soft-sided red and white Hello Kitty lunch box that my dad had got for me when he went to Japan on a business trip. It came with a matching thermos too and had little Hello Kitty face pull tabs on the lunch box. It was so cute!

  24. I am enjoying the memories… these descriptions are bringing back the smells (mystery meat), sounds (roaring), and sights (Larry caught in a fit of laughter as kool-aid spurted out of his nose) of my childhood. I had a slightly dented and slightly rusted metal lunchbox shaped like a bus. I loved the thermos… why don’t lunchboxes come with the thermoses anymore?

    Kristin
    7/17/09

  25. I remember always getting a new lunchbox for school every year, but the one that stands out to me was a Holly Hobbie one. It was metal and came with the matching thermos inside. You could use the lid as a cup or a bowl. I don’t even think they made juice boxes back then! This year is the first year I am going to get a lunchbox for my son and when I saw that they only sell the lunch totes without anything in side I was shocked and dissapointed.

  26. I always had to brown bag my lunch. My mom said we couldn’t afford lunch boxes when the stores just gave us paper bags. I know they don’t do that anymore. My favorite teacher was my first grade teacher, Mrs. Bobo. I got in trouble a lot since I could read and write already. I just managed to get finished quickly. Mrs. Bobo and my grandmother fostered my love of reading by showing me I could stay out of trouble by reading after doing my work. It kept me quite while everyone else finished daily work. I love to read. I hope you enjoy this memory from my school days. Another memory is the day JFK was shot and one of the teachers running down the hall yelling that “They Killed Him!” I was in 4th grade then. I hope you will consider me in your contest. I have 7 kids that i will have in school this year. They are my grandson, 4 great-nieces and 2 great- nephews who my husband and I are raising. Needless to say, school supplies are a strain on our budget. Never the less it was a great reason to reflect back on my younger days.

  29. I had two lunch boxes that I remember, one had horses all over it and a matching thermos. Being horse crazy, that was my favorite lunch box. My other one I remember was the Osmonds. I had the biggest crush on Donny. (yeah, that dates me – I’m almost 52) I had another “star” one too I think it was the Patridge Family my other childhood crush. I support three “schoolers” A preschooler grandson, an 8 yr old granddaughter and an 11 yr old grandson. So any help with organization (!) and school supplies would be great!

  39. I always ate the hot lunch at school. I actually never remember taking my lunch.
I remember hiding under the table on my birthday in fifth grade. The principal would always take you in front of the whole cafeteria and give you a certificate for your birthday and if you were a boy he’d give you a handshake, if you were a girl he’d give you a kiss on the cheek. We all thought it was gross. Now, looking back on it, it seems very weird that he would do that.

  45. I either bought my lunch in school or carried a brown paper bag through much of school —- I think this started the day my thermos broke– the old kind with the glass in it— The school was scared, and made me scared, and called my mother and scared her as they thought I had drunk glass. After that—– MILK CARTONS for me (I did survive though :P )

  92. My mother was green and frugal, Instead of buy paper sacks, she would buy the hard cases on clearance one year and surprise us with a new box the following year. I was also the youngest of four and got the hand-me-downs. A few I remember were my plastic pink My Little Pony lunch box, a metal Annie lunch box and a Transformers one (My son would love if I still had this one). Once the school year was over, the lunch boxes became our traveling to kits for summer vacation and helped organize our toys on our toy shelf the following fall.

  94. No lunch box. Just a brown paper bag with the best lunches inside. My parents owned a deli/restaurant and were ALWAYS there. To save time, my mom usually packed my lunches whatever goodies were left at the end of the day. Worked out well for me as I was the envy of every kid in the lunch room.

  102. It’s all up to Dad! I’m a reading coach for 1st grade so I have to be at school at 7:15. It’s all up to my wonderful husband to take our 4 year old daughter, Harley to Pre-K and my 3 year old son, Jax to his church preschool program. I have everything ready for my husband, Todd but he has the hardest job of getting them up, dressed, teeth/hair brushed, backpacks, lunchboxes and in the car. He too has a full time job at Coldwell Banker so I know that I’m blessed that he’s our Super Dad. I couldn’t do it without him. Christy-Tupelo, MS

  103. I didn’t take my lunch when I went to school, we always ate school lunches, but I have my dad’s lunch box. It looks like a paint can with a lid. I think he said was contained sorghum before it was repurposed! My favorite school memory is of the boy in kindergarten who taught me how to tie my shoes. I wanted to marry him one day! LOL

  105. O.K. don’t gasp….I didn’t have a lunch box growing up – I was the last of 5 and we ‘brown bagged it’, unless we were buying lunch that day. I can say I always wanted the strawberry stortcake lunch box with the thermos for soup. I remember telling my mom this and her never granting my wish. I guess at the time it was more important to have new school shoes or something else that took priority.
I turned out fine anyway, with out the showy lunch box and thermos.

  107. my luch box was Holly Hobby!!! Loved it!

    8/4/09

  108. My first lunch box was a blue, metal Holly Hobby lunch box with matching thermos. After I outgrew that, my mom went with plain brown lunch bags. I definitely loved having a lunch box as opposed to squished sandwiches and broken chips from a brown bag! I love the fact that nowadays lunch boxes even match the backpacks!

  109. I had a plastic strawberry shortcake lunchbox, with the matching plastic thermos. As I got older, it changed to plain old boring brown paper bags.

  111. I don’t remember my lunch box growing up but I loved the first day of school…and everything that led up to it. Going school shopping, buying new clothes and shoes and the anticipation of seeing my new class every year was always my highlight.

    Amanda
    8/4/09

  112. Oh, My favorite was the plastic Donny and Marie Osmond lunch box. I have a picture in my back to school dress, no front teeth, coming off the bus showing off my lunch box. As I got older I was demoted to brown bags.

  115. I can’t remember what kind of lunch box I had! I do remember that I didn’t like to eat lunch at school (couldn’t stand the smells in the cafeteria), so I usually threw away whatever my mom packed and ate when I got home.

  117. I remember waiting for the bus with my brother and sisters and we would eat half of our lunch before we would go to school. I would take a cheese sandwich everyday and it would make them so mad at me.

  122. I went to an British school during the 70′s in then newly-developing Malaysia. We had to wear uniforms, white socks with brown Mary-Janes and also had to purchase our school bags from a designated supplier. Actually, they were wicker baskets, hand-made by the visually-impaired, and the whole effect was very British despite the fact that it was a very tropical country and the temperature outside often approached 33 degrees with 100 % humidity.

At lunchtime, we would all be lined up at the doors of our classrooms and would be led in regimental fashion to the lunch area. Girls in one line and boys in another. We would walk up the central staircase (always on the left – another colonial hang-up) to the upper level where we would eat outdoors in a large shady gazebo. Noisiness was discouraged and eating with fingers was met with horror by the supervising teacher.

This was before the advent of convenience foods in that part of the world and almost all of us, whether our heritage was European, Asian, African, etc. – we all brought homemade meals in Tupperware or in Aladdin thermoses. One of the really neat moments was when the new student, a female student just arrived from “the States” (we all called it “America” then) opened up her lunch of peanut butter and purple jelly sandwiches to the consternation of everyone at the table. She even brought a jar of it to school the next day to show everyone how it looked. Anyone remember the vivid purple and brown swirled Smucker’s P&J? This was all very new and strange to everyone and we waited to see what else she would bring in the days that followed. We weren’t disappointed: the next week she brought jelly sandwiches with coloured sprinkles on top, followed by sliced banana and PB sandwiches. And then there was the Tang! We all tasted it and agreed that it was the strangest tasting drink we had ever drunk!

There was, however, one afternoon when even the most stringent rules of proper decorum and behaviour went out the window. I remember it was very warm, even for Malaysia. The cicadas were humming stridently and the heat had put us all into this conked-out daze. All of a sudden, someone started screaming and pointing at the ceiling and kids started running in every direction yelling hysterically. Turned out that the unbearable heat had also convinced a large Burmese python to seek respite in the rafters of our lunch area. There he was: beautifully patterned in mahogany and chocolate, wound like a massive ship’s rope around the large timbers overhead. He seemed totally unperturbed by the commotion his presence had caused.

Lunch of course was a complete shambles and the vice-principle spoke to us sternly the next day about the importance of maintaining a orderly exit strategy during an emergency. I don’t think, however, that anyone of us forgot the day we had lunch with a python!

  125. What a great question. I can’t remember a lunch box. I do remember brown paper bagging it at first. My school didn’t have a lunch program at the time, but when the weather was especially cold or snowy, we could bring a lunch and eat in the gym on the floor instead of walking home for lunch and then back to school again. Kids would be appalled by that now-a-days! LOL! My favorite memory is the anticipation of the new school year. I could never sleep the night before! I loved school!!

  127. My favorite lunch box was my Ewoks (sp?) lunch box that I had when I was in grade school. The funny thing is that I hadn’t even seen the movie (still haven’t), but I sure did think those things were cute. :o)

  128. My first lunch box was a disney school bus. It was great, I absolutely loved it. It opened in half like you’d think of the black construction workers. So the bus was painted on it, it had a thermos in the lid with the wire holding it in. It even had Mickey painted on the front, holding a stop sign for (I think) Bambi to cross in front of it. It, of course, was metal and eventually rusted at the hinges.

  129. My school lunchbox was one of those old-school metal boxes with a clunky, thick plastic thermos inside! Gosh, what was the design? Some kind of flower theme, I think!

Love the giveaway! So much nicer than my old school stuff when I was a kid :)

  140. I remember getting new lunchboxes every year before school started when I was really little. I don’t really remember the specific details except that they were those plastic ones with the matching thermos. I think I had Cabbage Patch Kids and Strawberry Shortcake. When I was older I guess I did the brown paper bag, and I think I had this tupperware lunchbox at one point. My husband, however, never had one and always wanted one, so a couple of years ago I ordered him a vintage transformers box on ebay. It came with a sesame street one, also. They sit on display on a shelf right here in our family room, and my three year old daughter gets SO excited when she gets to take hers on “field trips” (When we go to the park for lunch with friends, to the childrens’ museum, library shows outdoors, etc.) It brings back great memories for me, too, watching her proudly carry it places. I’ve had other moms ask me about it. Too bad they don’t make them exactly like that anymore!

  141. I was SO lucky – I went home for lunch in grade school! I lived close and way-back-then kids could walk home and back.

When I was in high school, I used to have a Tab (ancient soda pop) for lunch because I was forever on a diet.

Thanks for a great giveaway. My three year old is starting pre-school and would love the purple set. I need all the organization help I can get :)
